Beyond Belief - Who We Are?

http://www.bahai.org/

The Bahá'í Faith is the youngest of the world's independent religions. Its founder, Bahá'u'lláh (1817-1892), is regarded by Bahá'ís as the most recent in the line of Messengers of God that stretches back beyond recorded time and that includes Abraham, Moses, Buddha, Krishna, Zoroaster, Christ and Muhammad.

The central theme of Bahá'u'lláh's message is that humanity is one single race and that the day has come for its unification in one global society. God, Bahá'u'lláh said, has set in motion historical forces that are breaking down traditional barriers of race, class, creed, and nation and that will, in time, give birth to a universal civilization. The principal challenge facing the peoples of the earth is to accept the fact of their oneness and to assist the processes of unification.

If ever the name of Bahá’u’lláh or ‘Abdu’l-Bahá

“If ever the name of Bahá’u’lláh or ‘Abdu’l-Bahá comes to your attention,
do not... put their writings from you.
Search out their Books,
and let their glorious, peace-bringing, love-creating words and lessons
sink into your hearts as they have into mine.”

Baha'is Commemorate the Martyrdom of the Bab

Baha'is around the world commemorate the Martyrdom of the Bab this July 9. The Bab, a merchant who was born Siyyid 'Ali Muhammad, had declared in 1844 that He was a Messenger of God sent to initiate a new age for humankind. His turbulent ministry lasted a brief six years until, at the age of thirty one, He was martyred in 1850 at the citadel in Tabriz, Persia (now Iran). His title, the Bab, means the "Gate."

The Bab had also foretold the coming of another Messenger of God who would fulfill the prophetic expectations of all the world's religions and Whose teachings would lead to world civilization and world peace. Baha'is believe this Promised One of all humankind is Baha'u'llah. The events surrounding the lives of the Bab and Baha'u'llah and the development of the Baha'i Faith are the most thoroughly documented and corroborated accounts by eyewitnesses in the history of religion.

Baha'is Observe The Ascension of Baha'u'llah

The Ascension of Baha'u'llah -- as it is called by Baha'is -- is a Holy Day for six million people in 192 countries and territories. It was the day when the Founder of the Baha'i Faith concluded nearly 40 years of a ministry and imprisonment that led him as an exile through present-day Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Egypt, and finally to Akka, Israel, where he died under house arrest on May 29, 1892. The essence of his message was one of unity -- that the world's great religions all come from the same Source, and that the world's peoples are part of the same human family.....http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jonathan-gandomi/bahai-ascension-bahaullah_b_868505.html

Religious Teachings On The End Of The World

All Faith discussed in an article about Judgement Day and the end times!

The Baha'is have an interesting and different take on the end times scenario. Rather than expecting a Hollywood-screenwriter's dream that will occur within 24 hours, like this coming Saturday, they instead see "the end of days" as the end of one major stage of history and the beginning of a new one. This is harder to sell to Hollywood, but easier to reconcile with basic common sense and a modest understanding of history.

How Religion Changes a Chinese Billionaire Developer

A Chinese developer talks about the Baha'i Faith and about Egypt:

Zhang Xin, the billionaire Chief Executive of Soho China Ltd., insists she's not the woman she once was.

Religion has changed everything. At age 45, Ms. Zhang is reinventing herself as a moral and modest Baha'i convert who has transcended materialistic pursuits and now wants to focus on charity and education. "Baha'i has transformed me," she says.

To be sure, Zhang Xin isn't the only businessperson in China hoping to tackle social problems with religion. How Chinese society has lost its morality —and how to regain it—is a hot topic on both the Internet and around dinner tables.

They are the "It Couple" of China, known for their glitzy parties, designer clothes and celebrity friends.
But when I sat down with Ms. Zhang recently in her chic white-toned office in Beijing's central business district, she tells me, "If you knew me six years ago, you would think, 'This is a very annoying woman.' " She was "very arrogant" then, she says.
"We've put too much confidence in that materialistic abundance will bring along better education, which will in turn facilitate progresses in civilization," she wrote on Sina Weibo, a microblogging service where she has more than 1.4 million followers. "But China's development has smashed our illusion."
She hopes that religion, and Baha'i in particular, can help China to bridge the gap between fast economic growth and spiritual development that lags behind. A new religion with about six million believers globally, Baha'i emphasizes the spiritual unity of all humankind.
It's curious to hear Ms. Zhang, of all people, lament the results of materialism in modern China. After all, she's lived the China Dream more exuberantly than almost any other woman in the country. And for the past 16 years she and her husband have built their fortune selling that dream to the aspiring Chinese middle class. They are known for their futuristic buildings designed by Riken Yamamoto, Peter Davidson and Zaha Hadid.
In China, the property-developer label is synonymous with greed and excessive profits. Just last month, Premier Wen Jiabao pointed his finger at developers when talking about the country's housing problems. He urged developers to "take all their social responsibilities," adding that he believes "the blood flowing in their bodies should be moral too."
I can't help but ask Ms. Zhang why anybody would want to listen to her preaching about being good? Hasn't anybody called her hypocritical?
She's well aware of the image problem. "For many people who don't know me, they will naturally think, 'a developer, corrupted, not a good person,' " she says in her usual fast-talking, enthusiastic way. "I think many people, including me, are biased against many things. And bias comes from ignorance. Just like many Chinese, having never been to Japan, think all Japanese are bad people. Once the knowledge is there, the ignorance will go away, and bias will go away."
Does she find any conflict between ethical behavior and money-making, particularly in China's current business environment when abiding by rules can mean you'll be less likely to succeed?
No, Ms. Zhang says. If you're more honest than the other people, your business will perform better than them because your business partners will trust you more and want to do more business with you, she says. Besides, talented people like working for ethical companies.
To be sure, Ms. Zhang isn't the only businessperson in the country hoping to tackle social problems with religion. How Chinese society has lost its morality —and how to regain it—is a hot topic on both the Internet and around dinner tables.
One of the more dominant theories goes like this: the Communist Party made all Chinese atheists; then the Cultural Revolution destroyed all Confucian doctrines that guided Chinese society for thousands of the years; finally, in their relentless pursuit of wealth in the past 30 years, Chinese broke away from whatever moral boundaries that were left. It's a country that has no reverence, no respect and no fear.
People blame the loss of morality for social ills from pollution to corruption and infidelity. Along with higher living standards have come higher levels of anxiety.
Some have turned to religion for solace. According to a 2010 survey by the Chinese Academy of Social Science, there are more than 20 million Christians in China, and 73% of them were converted after 1993, just about the time the economy went into overdrive.
Ms. Zhang says she converted to Baha'i in 2005 after a family crisis made her question the meaning of the success she had worked so hard for. She found that prayer could be calming.
Mr. Pan converted about the same time. Now they sometimes post their prayers and their interpretations of Baha'i teachings on Sina Weibo, where Mr. Pan has about 3.5 million followers.
Ms. Zhang never lets her musings on religion stray into the area of politics. She claims to be apolitical, and doesn't believe that changing the political system will lead to a better society. She says that the revolution in Egypt didn't really change its society, citing the sexual assault on CBS correspondent Lara Logan immediately after Hosni Mubarak stepped down as president. It doesn't make any difference if it's a democracy or a dictatorship, she says. "The real change comes when people's hearts change. When everybody has a better heart, the whole society will change."
Then will the religious beliefs of China's most famous business couple have as much influence on young people as their previous glamorous lifestyle?
"I hope so," she says. "In our early days, we tried to be a creative developer. And we tried to throw the best parties. Now there are [other] creative developers like us. And we've come to the point in our lives that we believe that Chinese society needs spiritual guidance, and we're privileged to receive such a beautiful thing. We need to share it with everyone."
"But you're a developer, and in China…" I asked again.
Ms. Zhang smiles, "It is indeed very interesting that we're doing this. This is so ironic."

Best Letter in 2010

Great example of asking for Justice, Human Rights in a peaceful but eloquent letter..
Subject: The Seven Baha'is imprisoned in Iran......

From the BAHA'I INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY; United Nations Office
To Ayatollah Mohammad Sadeq Larijani, Head of the Judiciary, Islamic Republic of Iran
Date 7 December 2010

" .............The lives of these seven Baha'is typify not only the lives of the Baha'is of Iran but also those of high-minded and noble-hearted Iranians of every creed and class. They are true citizens of that nation who have striven to dedicate themselves to its service.......
Convinced that they had committed no wrong, and as there existed no proof whatsoever to support the accusations leveled against them, they had every hope that the judicial proceedings would exonerate them. Sadly, however, their hopes have thus far been frustrated, and the treatment they have received has unjustly violated every legal norm and every standard of fairness and equity.

As history bears witness, whenever innocent citizens are brought before show trials, it is the judicial system itself and those who wield authority within it that are on trial before the public gaze. The case of these seven individuals, which from the outset has been watched with growing interest by Iranians and non-Iranians alike, has been marked by such egregious violations
of the law at every turn as to call into question the adherence to the principle of justice by a system that claims to uphold Islamic values.

The blatant injustice of a sentence to ten years' imprisonment handed down to such honest and law-abiding citizens impels us, as the representatives at the United Nations of one hundred and eighty-six national Baha'i communities, to ask you to rectify this grave failure and accord the defendants the justice they have been denied. This request comes not only from their coreligionists throughout the world but from the United Nations, from governments and parliamentarians across the globe, from agencies of civil society, and from humanitarians and social thinkers, all of whom join their voices to ours in calling for the immediate release of these wronged individuals...........

There is not a shred of evidence to support the accusation that these Baha'is were seeking to compromise national security, participating in subversive activities, or engaging in propaganda against the regime, charges which the defendants themselves have categorically denied. Such accusations are entirely inconsistent with the outstanding record of the Baha'is in Iran and around the world, who regard service to one's homeland and to humankind as an inescapable moral obligation.
Nor do they accord in any way with the Baha'i
teachings, which assert that "in every country where any of this people reside,
they must behave towards the government of that country with loyalty, honesty,
and truthfulness."
......

The Baha'is are not "others" in your country: they are an inseparable
part of the Iranian nation. The injustices meted out to them are a reflection
of the terrible oppression that has engulfed the nation. Your respect now for
the rights of the Iranian Baha'is would signal a willingness to respect the
rights of all the citizens of your country. Redressing the wrongs suffered by
the Baha'is would bring hope to the hearts of all Iranians that you are ready
to ensure justice for everyone. Our call, then, is in reality a call for
respect of the rights of all the Iranian people.

With our hearts filled with love for Iran and our earnest hopes for the
exaltation and glory of that land, we urge you, in your capacity as the Head of
the Judiciary, to release the former members of the Yaran from prison and,
along with them, all the Baha'is who are incarcerated across the country.....
.
We likewise request that the Baha'is in that country be granted their full
rights of citizenship, in order that they may be able to fulfill their
heartfelt aspiration to contribute, alongside their fellow citizens, to the
advancement of their nation. This, indeed, is no more than what you rightfully
ask for Muslim minorities who reside in other lands. Baha'is merely seek the
same treatment from you.
Respectfully,
Baha'i International Community

Irish President makes historic visit to Baha'i Centre

DUBLIN, IRELAND, 28 May (BWNS) -The President of the Republic of Ireland, Mary McAleese, has praised the universality of the Baha'i teachings and the contribution its members make to the life of their nation.

"You are marked out as people with values that are worth observing, worth learning from, worth looking at, worth imitating and so never be in any doubt of the value you are every single day in this world," President McAleese told a gathering of some 60 Baha'is during her first ever visit to the National Baha'i Centre in the Irish capital.

"Something you probably do not know, and I am sure it is true of many of you, is that in and through your lives, you are extraordinary ambassadors for your Faith," she said in impromptu remarks.

President McAleese, first elected as Ireland's President in 1997, made her special visit to the Baha'i Centre on 30 April to mark the Festival of Ridvan, the anniversary of Baha'u'llah's declaration in 1863 that He is the most recent in a line of divine Messengers that includes Buddha, Jesus, Krishna, Mohammed, Moses, Zoroaster, and others.

Baha'i Education in Australia

Baha'i Education in State Schools in Australia:

"The Australian Baha'i community provides Baha’i education classes in many public primary schools under the “Special Religious Education” or “Scripture” program. Students from all religious backgrounds are welcome to attend (with their parents’ permission) and many currently do.

The classes assist children to develop their spiritual nature, complementing the material and physical education provided by schools. Based on the teachings of Baha'u'llah, the classes emphasise the development of spiritual attributes or virtues and attempt to foster in students the knowledge, skills, understandings and values required to be world citizens. Students are encouraged to embrace the oneness of humankind in all its diversity.

Baha'is around the World - UK

An octogenarian has received her MBE from the Queen for her services to charity.

Christina Kitchen, 83, was awarded the honour for collecting money over a period of 47 years and serving in Oxfam shops in Epsom and Leatherhead.

Recipients of the honour are usually allowed to take two guests to the ceremony, but Mrs Kitchen wrote and asked for permission to take her four sons, and her request was granted by the Queen. Mrs Kitchen went with her sons to Windsor Castle to collect the award earlier this month.

She said: "I was delighted that my four sons were able to attend the ceremony and witness their mother receive this honour from Her Majesty the Queen". The pensioner was a Biology teacher at Rosebery School and a member of the Bahá’í Faith in Epsom and Ewell, since 1978.

The Bahá’is believe in the importance of integrating with the local community through charitable work.

You have written that there is a difference among the believers concerning the 'Second Coming of Christ.' Gracious God! Time and again this question hath arisen, and its answer hath emanated in a clear and irrefutable statement from the pen of `Abdu'l-Bahá, that what is meant in the prophecies by the `Lord of Hosts' and the 'Promised Christ' is the Blessed Perfection (Bahá'u'lláh) ...

My name is `Abdu'l-Bahá. My qualification is `Abdu'l-Bahá. My reality is `Abdu'l-Bahá. My praise is `Abdu'l-Bahá. Thraldom to the Blessed Perfection is my glorious and refulgent diadem, and servitude to all the human race my perpetual religion...

No name, no title, no mention, no commendation have I, nor will ever have, except `Abdu'l-Bahá. This is my longing. This is my greatest yearning. This is my eternal life. This is my everlasting glory. (World Order of Bahá'u'lláh, page 139

On November 28, members of the Baha'i Faith throughout the world commemorate the passing of 'Abdu'l-Baha, the eldest son and successor of Baha'u'llah, 83 years ago.

'Abdu'l-Baha died in His house in Haifa in 1921, aged 77. More than 10,000 mourners, representing every one of the diverse religions and ethnic communities in the Holy Land, attended His funeral.

He was laid to rest in a vault adjoining that in which He had laid the remains of the Bab on Mount Carmel in 1909.

Birth of Baha'u'llah on 12 November

Baha'is celebrate Birth of Baha'u'llah on 12 November,
Baha'is around the globe will celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Baha'u'llah, the founder of the Baha'i Faith. In 1853, He was exiled from His native land to Baghdad, where in 1863 He announced that He was the bearer of a new revelation from God that would bring unity to the peoples of the world. He was later exiled to Acre, in present-day Israel, where He passed away in 1892.

You can not stop the light, its shinning is so bright.......................

9 World Religions in action

Leaders representing the world's major religions, including the Baha'i Faith, gathered yesterday at historic Windsor Castle to formally launch a series of action plans involving their communities in a long-term effort to protect the environment.

"I have long believed that when governments and civil society work toward a common goal, transformational change is possible," said Mr. Ban. "Faiths and religions are a central part of that equation.

"Indeed, the world's faith communities occupy a unique position in discussions on the fate of our planet and the accelerating impacts of climate change," he said.

The core session of the gathering was yesterday's meeting at Windsor Castle, where representatives of each religious group presented a seven-year plan designed to promote "generational change" in attitudes towards the environment.

In general, the plans sought to offer concrete, practical steps for action.

The Muslim plan, for example, calls for the establishment of an umbrella organization, Muslim Associations for Climate Change Action (MACCA), that will represent Islamic nations and faith communities from around the world. It also calls for an Islamic environmental labeling system, a "Green Hajj" so that within 10 years the traditional Islamic pilgrimage will be recognized as environmentally friendly, and the construction of a model "green mosque" to showcase best practices in heating, light, and design.

Representatives of the Baha'i Faith presented a plan that focuses on using a system of regional training institutes to encourage within the worldwide Baha'i community "acts of service related to environmental sustainability." "Baha'is believe that religious belief and spirituality lie at the foundation of human motivation and behavior," said Tahirih Naylor, a Baha'i International Community representative to the United Nations who was one of two Baha'i delegates to the Windsor event.

Unity of Religion is possible by the Baha'is

Wonderful article from Minnesota, USA

It seems an honorable goal for any religion – to unite people of all backgrounds, rise above the division and prejudice of the world, and become lovers of all humankind.

That’s what people of the Baha’i faith hope to achieve. They want people to recognize that we are all children of one loving God. They want to unite all the races and peoples of the world. They want civilization to be built on a foundation of love and justice........................

When talking about matters of faith with one another, everyone wants others to respect their views. Practice self-restraint and concern for other people’s freedom and dignity. This means:

• Listening as well as speaking.

• Being honest about beliefs and religious alliances.

• Correcting misunderstandings between faiths when they arise.

• Respect the rights of others to disagree with you.

Baha'is and Politics # 2

“As you are aware, Baha'is do not engage in partisan political activities:

“You should take every opportunity to explain to your fellow citizens the fundamental principle of the Faith that strictly prohibits involvement in partisan political activity of any kind, whether local, national or international. Baha'is view government as a system for maintaining the welfare and orderly progress of human society, and obedience to the laws of the land is a distinguishing feature of their beliefs. Iran is dear to the Baha'is, who are the well-wishers of all. In whatever country they reside, including the birthplace of Baha'u'llah, they strive to promote the welfare of society. They are enjoined to work alongside their compatriots in fostering fellowship and unity and in establishing peace and justice. They seek to uphold their own rights, as well as the rights of others, through whatever legal means are available to them, conducting themselves at all times with honesty and integrity. They eschew conflict and dissension. They avoid contest for worldly power. Neither do they aspire to overthrow governments, nor do they participate in the schemings of others to do so. The record of the past one hundred and sixty years bears witness to this assertion. Universal House of Justice, 31 October 2008
