March 16th and Baha'is in Egypt



15 year old twin Emad and Nancy are still struggling in courts to have their birth certificate & ID card since 2004



Jan 29th 2008 court ruled to have "dash" instead of their Baha'i religion, but two lawyers appealed.
Jan 17th and Feb 25th 2009 the court rejected both appeals.
March 16th 2009 Egyptian Supreme Court has rejected the appeal launched by Islamist lawyers against the the ruling which permitted Baha’is to obtain official documents with a dash (-) listed under the mandatory “Religion” field...


قضت المحكمة الإدارية العليا برئاسة المستشار إبراهيم الصغير، بعدم قبول الطعن المقدم من المحامى عبد المجيد العنانى ضد البهائيين مع تأكيد أحقيتهم بوضع علامة "-" فى خانة الديانة.وقالت المحكمة فى أسباب حكمها إن المادة ٤٦ من الدستور المصرى أكدت أن الدولة تكفل حرية العقيدة، وأضافت: «حتى إذا كانت البهائية ليست من الديانات السماوية المعترف بها فلا يمكن أن يجبر أى بهائى على كتابة إحدى الديانات المعترف بها فى خانة ديانته على غير الحقيقة». وأوضحت أن قانون الأحوال المدنية أكد ضرورة أن تكون سجلات الأحوال المدنية والمعلومات والهوية للمواطنين صحيحة.
"This is the first time that the Supreme Administrative Court has found that any Egyptian has the right to keep their religious convictions private, even if the state does not recognize their belief system," said Mr. Bahgat, whose organization handled legal representation for Baha'is in court. "The final ruling is a major victory for all Egyptians fighting for a state where all citizens enjoy equal rights regardless of their religion or belief," he said..
