Purpose of Suffering

"There was a certain king who wanted to appoint one of his citizens to a high office. But instead of giving him the job, he had the man thrown into prison. The man was very surprised, because he had expected favours. The king then had the man taken out of the prison and beaten with sticks. Again the man could not understand, because he thought the king loved him. After this he was hanged by his neck until he was almost dead. When the man well again, he asked the king, " If you love me, why do you do all these things to me?" And the king replied, " I wish to make you my Prime Minister. By going through all these sufferings you are now better fitted for that position. I wanted you to know how it feels yourself. Then, when you are forced to punish others in these ways, you will know what it is like to experience them. I love, you, so I wish you to become perfect." Abdu'l-Baha'

'..Be a treasure to the poor,...an answerer of the cry of the needy...Be unjust to no man...be as...a joy to the sorrowful, a sea for the thirsty, a haven for the distressed, an upholder and defender of the victim of oppression. ...Be a home for the stranger, a balm to the suffering, a tower of strength for the fugitive. Be eyes to the blind, and a guiding light unto the feet of the erring,...a breath of life to the body of mankind. ..' [Gleanings - Writings of Bahá'u'lláhد]
